WATCH vs. WARNING – KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

  • TROPICAL STORM WATCH: An announcement that tropical storm conditions (sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph) are possible within the specified coastal area within 48 hours.
  • TROPICAL STORM WARNING: An announcement that tropical storm conditions (sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph) are expected somewhere within the specified coastal area within 36 hours.
  • HURRICANE WATCH: An announcement that hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are possible within the specified coastal area. Because hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force, the hurricane watch is issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical-storm-force winds.
  • HURRICANE WARNING: An announcement that hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected somewhere within the specified coastal area. Because hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force, the hurricane warning is issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical-storm-force winds.

A Couple of Suggestions When a Major Storm is about to Strike

  1. Any items that you have placed outside your home should be brought inside.  This includes your screened lanai areas as well.
  2. If you have a home that requires installation of metal hurricane panels and you need assistance with installing them before a storm, we suggest that you contact a hurricane shutter company well in advance and have them ready to come out and perform the installation for you.  You will also want to make sure they are scheduled to come out after the storm to remove the panels within 10 days after the storm has passed.  If you wait until the last minute you may not be able to find anyone to do this for you.
  3. If you plan to be vacant from your home during the storm turn your water valve off.  This is something that should take place any time of the year that you will not be in residence of your home.
  4. Hire Sherlock Home Inspections to conduct a Post Storm Damage Assessment Inspection.

Sherlock Home Inspections is monitoring Tropical Storm Dorian which is currently projected to make landfall on the East Coast of Florida early Sunday morning.
