While our list is not quite as extensive as it is for folks up north, there are a few things we should do around the house to prepare for winter.
The first item on any monthly, or seasonal Home Maintenance Checklist should be to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace batteries as needed. Once that’s done…
- Clean your dryer vent – both at the dryer connection & outside.
- Have a professional check and clean your A/C system + replace the air filter.
- Make sure the weather stripping and caulking around doors and windows is adequate to reduce heat/cooling loss.
- Clean the rain gutters and downspouts.
- Check the attic insulation – look for signs of moisture from roof leaks and nesting from vermin.
- Clean Garbage Disposal – Pour half a box of baking soda down the drain, top off with vinegar & let it foam up. Allow the foam to settle, and repeat until all of the baking soda is gone. Allow the drain to sit unused for a while, then Run hot water down the drain before use.
- Clean kitchen exhaust hood and filter.
- Drain sediment from water heater.
- Vacuum refrigerator coils – behind cardboard backing in the rear.
- Trim trees and shrubs away from house.
- Inspect wood decks for any nails or screws that may be popping up.
